Types of “Cookies”

Following is a classification of cookies according to category. Please note however that any given cookie may be included in more than one category.

1. Types of cookie classified by the entity that manages them

Depending on the entity that manages the device or the domain that sends the cookie and manages the data obtained, we can distinguish between:

- First Party Cookies: First-party cookies are those sent to the user from a device or domain managed by the editor of the site that is providing the service requested by the user.

- Third Party Cookies: These cookies are those sent to the user’s computer by a device or a domain that is not managed by the editor, but by another entity that manages the data obtained through the use of the cookies.

If the cookies are installed by a device or domain which is managed by the editor, but where the information collected is managed by a third party, they cannot be considered first-party cookies.

2. Types of cookie classified according to the time they remain active

Depending on the amount of time the cookie remains active on your computer, we can distinguish between:

- Session cookies: these cookies are designed to collect and store information while the user is visiting a particular web site. They are generally used to store that information which is only required to provide a particular service requested by a user during one unique session (for example, a list of products purchased).

- Persistent cookies: With this type of cookie information is stored on your computer and may be accessed and treated over a defined period by the cookie’s manager, which may be over a period of minutes or of years.

3. Types of cookies classified according to what they are used for

Depending on how the information obtained by the cookies will be used, we can distinguish between:

- Strictly necessary cookies: These cookies enable the user to navigate around the website, platform or application and to use the different options or services available on the site, such as, for example, controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing secure areas, remembering ordered products, carrying out a purchase, registering on a site, participating in an event, using secure elements during browsing, storing content for diffusion of videos or sound or sharing content on social networks.

- Functionality cookies: These allow the user to use a service with some general characteristics already predefined to take into account a series of criteria established on the user’s terminal, such as the language, the type of browser used to access the service, the regional configuration etc.

- Analysis cookies: These cookies allow the cookie’s manager to follow and analyse the behaviour of the user when visiting the web sites to which it is connected. The information used by this type of cookies is used to measure web-site, application or platform activity and to elaborate user browsing profiles for said web-sites, applications or platforms, with the purpose of improving service using the data to analyse how users use the service.

With respect to the treatment of data obtained from the use of analysis cookies, the Article 29 working party ((Working Document 02/2013 providing guidance on obtaining consent for cookies) declared that, while not exempt from the duty to obtain informed consent on their use, it is unlikely that their use will represent a risk to user privacy, always given that they are first-party cookies, that they use the aggregated data for strictly statistical reasons, and that users are informed of their use and are given the possibility to opt out with regards to their use.

- Advertising cookies: These are used to maximize efficiency on advertising spacesm if these are used by the operator on the web page, application or platform on which the requested service is provided, based on criteria such as edited content or the frequency with which publicity is shown.

- Behavioural advertising cookies: These are used to maximize efficiency on advertising spaces if used by the operator on the web page, application or platform on which the requested service is provided. These cookies store information about the user’s behaviour by continually observing said user’s browsing habits, allowing a specific profile to be built up which is used to show advertising material directly targeted at the user.

Deactivating and eliminating cookies

The user can deactivate cookies by configuring his/her browser, which offer the user the choice to restrict, at any time, the cookies that are accepted by the browser, blocking them either partially or fully, according to the user’s wishes:
